Recommendations: The Double Reed family of Woodwind instruments includes the oboe, English Horn, and Bassoon. It is not recommended that students begin on these instruments. If your child is an advanced student playing one of these instruments, private lessons are HIGHLY recommended.

PERCUSSION: Students should choose either a Snare Drum set or a Bell Set. If the student has a piano background, then the student has a real advantage for participating in All-Region Band competition because of the keyboard mallet requirements. Percussion players have the option of getting a Bell Set (should include a drum pad) or a Snare Drum Set.

BASIC BAND INSTRUMENTS:
lwhitson@singandplay.com
Basic band instruments can be purchased from any music store that sells new or used band instruments (J&L School of Music does not provide any instruments). Used rental or returned instruments may also be available from the music stores. THESE STORES SELL QUALITY BAND INSTRUMENTS and the brands of instruments are the ones you should choose. If you acquire an instrument from a different source, make sure that it is a brand sold in one of the instrument stores listed on the Links Page. If the instrument needs repair, all of these stores have repair facilities and they can help you. These stores also carry music stands and all the supplies and parts that an instrument might need, i.e. reeds for clarinets and saxophones, oil for brass instruments, and sticks for percussion.

It is recommended that clarinet and sax players buy their own reed guard because it protects the reeds and will prove to be a real money saver.
LARGER HARMONIC INSTRUMENTS:
These larger harmonic instruments are also available from the listed stores on the Links page and are generally very expensive and are not beginning band instruments. Alto and Bass Clarinets can be and usually are very “temperamental” and might not always respond very well.

The J&L School of Music will be more than glad to teach these larger, harmonic instruments and at no extra cost per hour.
•Includes assorted Cymbals, Congas, Bongos, Temple Blocs, Vibraphones, etc.
