At J&L School of Music, we believe that the universal language of music is essential for every child’s development. Our mission is to provide an enjoyable, creative opportunity for home schooled students to learn music so that they can express themselves through music throughout their lives.

The J&L School of Music has been serving home schooled students in the North Dallas area since 2001. We began first with Elementary Music for grades 1-4, and a few years later, added Band for grades 5-12. We have added a Choir program for students in grades 5-12 in the 2009-2010 school year!

Lydia Whitson founded the J&L School of Music in 2001 after having taught in public school for twenty years. Her students have won group and individual awards during her years in public school and that legacy of winning awards has continued with her homeschoolers.

All of our performing groups participate in competition at the Sandy Lake Funfest. Band members participate in Solo and Ensemble Contest and TPSMEA Honor Band. Choir members will also participate in these activities next year.

During the 2007-2008 school year, our students won individual awards at Solo and Ensemble contest. Elementary and Band won high ratings at Sandy Lake.

Classes will be meeting at five convenient locations: McKinney, Sunnyvale, Lucas, Farmers Branch, and Richardson.

Mrs. Whitson attended East Texas State University in Commerce, Texas (now Texas A&M University, Commerce, Texas). She currently plays French horn in a church orchestra. Teaching and performing music is her passion and ministry.
